October 1980 and D1048 stands on 9 up staging road. I don't recall what service worked this train in but
Western Lady was en-route from the North Yorkshire Moors Railway to Horwich near Bolton. I wish I'd taken a
ten quid bet out in 1973 that there would one day be a Western gracing the rails at HM!
On realising that this outside odds event was actually going to happen I made sure that I'd get a good shot of it
and asked the AFA (area freight assistant) to route it onto 9 as the other available roads might have blocked the
view! The line Just to the right is the north feed line from 49 and 50 primary allowed shunting onto the east end
of the up stagings and supply road for the up secondary sorting sidings.
D1048 is currently in blue livery and is privately owned, based at the Midland Railway Centre at Butterley under
restoration.
